Plant Layout
The layout carries information that appears nowhere else. Production rate is frequently printed in the title block. Column positions and existing services constrain where equipment can physically go. Aisle widths and door openings decide whether a machine ships assembled or in pieces, which changes both the freight cost and the site labour. None of that is in the equipment specification.
It also carries the constraints that turn into arguments. A layout showing your equipment in a space bounded by existing columns is telling you the footprint is fixed, whether or not the specification says so. A layout with an existing conveyor running through your area is telling you about an interface that somebody has to design, and the specification may well be silent about whose job that is.
For quoting, the layout is worth reading before the specification. It tells you the scale of the job in a minute, and it tells you which questions to ask. Where a layout is provided at low resolution or without dimensions, that itself is worth an early question, because scaling a drawing to derive a dimension is how suppliers end up with equipment that does not fit.
What to read off a layout first
- Title block: production rate, revision, date. A superseded layout is a common and expensive error.
- Footprint bounds: columns, existing equipment, fencing. These fix the envelope whatever the spec says.
- Access route: door widths, aisle widths, crane coverage. These decide shipped-assembled versus site-assembled.
- Service drops: power, air, water positions. A long run to a drop is cost somebody is carrying.
- Interfaces: where your equipment meets somebody else's. The commonest source of scope dispute.
