Frequently asked questions
How do you convert HRC to Brinell?
Through a correlation table, not a formula: 30 HRC ≈ 286 HB, 40 HRC ≈ 371 HB, 50 HRC ≈ 481 HB. The scales measure different indentations, so conversions are empirical. Brinell is not defined above roughly 58 HRC.
How accurate are hardness conversions?
Good enough for planning and sanity checks, not for acceptance. If the drawing specifies 36 to 40 HRC, test in HRC rather than converting a Brinell reading.
The drawing says HRC but the mill cert shows HB. What goes on the FAI?
Record what the cert shows, convert for reference, and verify the finished part in the specified scale when the requirement applies to the part rather than the raw material.
Does this work for aluminum or stainless?
No. This table is for non-austenitic steel. Aluminum and austenitic stainless have their own correlation tables with different values.
