Weight is where every material price starts

Metal is bought by weight, so every quote starts the same way: section area × length × density. Carbon steel runs 7.85 g/cm³, stainless about 8.0, aluminum 2.7, titanium 4.51. A useful shortcut worth memorizing: steel plate weighs 7.85 kg per square meter per millimeter of thickness, so a 3 mm sheet is about 23.6 kg/m².

The densities here are standard nominal values; specific alloys drift by a percent or two (6061 aluminum is 2.70, 7075 is 2.81). For weight-critical work, confirm against the grade's datasheet, and remember quoted material usually includes a scrap or drop allowance on top of the net weight this calculator gives you.

How do you calculate the weight of steel?
Cross-section area × length × density (7.85 g/cm³ for carbon steel). A 100 × 10 mm flat bar one meter long: 1000 cm³ × 7.85 = 7.85 kg. The formula is identical for every section once you know its area.
What density should I use per metal?
Nominal values in g/cm³: carbon steel 7.85, stainless 8.0, aluminum 2.7, brass 8.5, copper 8.94, titanium 4.51, cast iron 7.2, zinc 7.14, lead 11.34. Exact alloys vary slightly, check the grade datasheet when weight is critical.
How do I calculate steel plate weight?
Length × width × thickness × density. A 1000 × 500 × 12 mm plate is 6000 cm³ × 7.85 = 47.1 kg. Shortcut: 7.85 kg per m² per mm of thickness.
Why do estimators calculate metal weight?
Material is usually the biggest single cost in a part and it is bought by weight, so quoting starts at weight × price per kg plus scrap. Doing that from every drawing in an RFQ is repetitive, which is why it is one of the first steps AI quoting automates.
