Manufacturing Cell
Lines are quoted cell by cell because that is how they are designed. A layout gets divided into stages, each stage becomes a cell, and each cell gets a robot count, a fixture count, a controller and a share of the conveyor. Add the cells and you have what integrators call the content of the line: so many robots, so many conveyors, so many stations.
The reason this matters commercially is that a missing cell is not a small error. On a line worth tens of millions, one omitted cell can be seven figures, and it is not recoverable after award, because the customer contracted for a functioning line and a line missing a stage does not function. The supplier builds it and absorbs the cost. This is the single most expensive failure mode in line quoting and it is a reading failure, not an arithmetic one.
It is a reading failure because cells are inferred rather than listed. The layout shows a floor plan and the requirements document states a rate; how many cells that implies is an engineering judgment made under time pressure across a document set that may run to fifty pages plus drawings. Nobody writes down the cell that was never considered, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed until build.
What a cell usually carries
- Robots: count and payload class, which drives both cost and the fixture design around them.
- End of arm tooling: grippers and weld guns, frequently the part adapted from a previous job.
- Fixtures: part-specific, and the element least likely to carry over between programmes.
- Controls: cell controller, safety circuit, HMI. Often specified in a separate section of the requirements.
- Guarding: fencing, light curtains, interlocks. Priced by area, and easy to underestimate on an irregular layout.
