How to read it

What H7 means, and why it is on so many drawings.

An ISO 286 fit code has two parts: a letter that fixes where the tolerance zone sits relative to the nominal size, and a number that sets how wide that zone is. For a hole, an uppercase H places the lower limit exactly at nominal - the hole is never smaller than the stated size. The 7 is the IT7 standard tolerance grade, which grows with the diameter, so a small bore gets a tight band and a large bore a wider one.

Why H7 is the default precision hole

H7 is the workhorse of hole-basis fits. Because the hole is fixed at H7, the fit is chosen by selecting the shaft: an H7/g6 gives a clearance fit that slides, H7/k6 a transition fit that locates, H7/p6 an interference fit that stays put. Holding the hole constant and varying the shaft is cheaper to manufacture, which is why H7 shows up on dowel holes, bearing bores, and locating features across nearly every precision drawing.

What is an H7 tolerance?
H7 is a standard ISO 286 tolerance for a hole. The letter H means the lower deviation is zero, so the hole is never smaller than nominal. The 7 is the IT7 grade, which sets how much larger than nominal it may be. H7 is the most common hole tolerance for precision location fits.
Is H7 a hole or a shaft?
A hole. An uppercase letter denotes a hole; a lowercase letter denotes a shaft, so the shaft equivalent would be h7. H7 is used in hole-basis fits, paired with shafts such as g6 (clearance) or k6 (transition).
What is the H7 tolerance for a 30 mm bore?
A 30 mm diameter falls in the 18-to-30 mm band, where H7 is +0.021 / 0 mm - so a 30 mm H7 bore may measure from 30.000 mm to 30.021 mm.
How is H7 different from h7?
H7 (uppercase) is a hole: lower deviation 0, upper deviation +IT7. h7 (lowercase) is a shaft: upper deviation 0, lower deviation −IT7. Same magnitude, opposite direction, opposite feature.
