A few weeks ago I watched a quality engineer at a machine shop get a new laptop. The first thing he did, before any actual work, was file a ticket with IT to get his FAI software reinstalled. The license. The local database. The OCR add-on. A day of waiting on a help desk before he could balloon a single drawing.

When it was finally back, I watched him work. He opened a scanned aerospace drawing, and the screen filled with a grid he had to drive by hand. He drew a box around a dimension. Clicked. Drew a box around the next one. Clicked. When he hit a feature control frame, the tool gave him the symbol and left him to type in the datums himself. Why people look for a DISCUS alternative

DISCUS is the original. It is the desktop FAI tool that a lot of aerospace quality departments grew up on, and for a long time it was the serious choice. When people go looking for something else, it is usually for one of three reasons.

It lives on the desktop. DISCUS is software you install on a machine, with a local setup and a local license. That is the heritage. It means IT involvement to deploy it, a reinstall when someone gets a new computer, and a tool that is wherever the install is, not wherever the engineer is. There is no "open a browser and go."

The extraction is manual point-and-click. DISCUS has an OCR add-on called IDA. Even with it, the day is built around a human boxing characteristics on screen, frame by frame. The tool waits for you to point. You point, it copies, you point again. The software is the canvas. You are still the one doing the reading.

It is weakest exactly where the hard work is. Plain dimensions are the easy part. The day actually gets eaten by GD&T and notes, and that is precisely where a desktop OCR tool leaves you most exposed. A feature control frame comes through as a symbol you complete by hand. A general tolerance note in the title block sits there as text while you look up the real values. The hardest, most important characteristics are the ones it hands back to you.

The first two are about friction and deployment. The third is about the technology underneath, and it is the part worth understanding before you switch anything.

The reframe: it is not which OCR tool, it is whether to use OCR at all

Here is the sentence that changes the whole decision. DISCUS, through its IDA add-on, reads drawings with OCR. That is not a knock invented to sell against it. It is how this entire generation of tools works, and how the category describes itself.

So the real comparison is not DISCUS versus some other desktop ballooning program with a slightly nicer grid. Every legacy tool in this space runs the same era of engine. 1Factory calls its version traditional OCR. High QA calls its version smart OCR. InspectionXpert is OCR with manual point-and-click. DISCUS is OCR with IDA. Different logos, same generation. They were all built ten to twenty years ago, before a machine could actually read a drawing the way a person does.

Choosing among them is choosing which OCR tool you correct after. The question underneath is whether to use OCR at all.

OCR versus AI, in plain terms

OCR means optical character recognition. It is the same family of technology that turns a scanned page into selectable text. It is genuinely good at one thing: finding characters and copying them. On a drawing, that means it can usually locate a dimension sitting in a clean, isolated box and copy the number out.

But a drawing is not a page of text. A drawing is an engineering document where the meaning lives in relationships. A note on sheet one governs a tolerance on sheet seven. A feature control frame is not three numbers, it is a geometric instruction tied to datums A, B, and C. "9 G6" is not text, it is a fit class that has to be expanded into real limits. An untoleranced dimension is not blank, it is governed by a general tolerance standard that changes the allowable amount based on the size of the feature.

OCR sees none of that. It sees boxes of characters. It detects. It does not interpret. That is why the work falls back on the engineer. The desktop tool copies the characters, and the person supplies the engineering. The boxing, the typing of datums, the looking up of tolerances: that is the interpreting that OCR was never doing.

This is the iPhone-and-BlackBerry moment. The BlackBerry was a fine phone. It was the best of its kind. Then a different kind of thing arrived and the old kind looked like the old kind overnight. Not because it got worse, but because the category moved.

What this looks like on a real drawing

Take one untoleranced 305 millimeter dimension on a drawing whose title block calls out ISO 2768-m.

A desktop OCR tool waits for you to box the dimension, copies "305," and writes it on the Form 3. The tolerance column is blank, or it carries a single flat default someone configured once. Now the engineer has to know that ISO 2768-m gives a 305 millimeter dimension a tolerance of plus or minus 0.5 millimeters, that a 12 millimeter dimension on the same drawing gets plus or minus 0.2 millimeters, and that they differ because the tolerance depends on size. So he looks it up. Forty times. Per drawing.

The "9 G6" that needs to become 9.005 to 9.014 millimeters. The note on the first sheet that quietly governs a wall thickness on the seventh, carried onto the tolerance it governs. The surface finish callout. The flag note pointing to a process spec. A desktop OCR tool detects the easy ones and leaves the rest for your cursor. An AI that reads the drawing handles them because it understands what they mean, not just where the characters sit.

Notice there is no row about money. That is on purpose. This is not a decision about the price tag. It is an OCR-versus-AI decision, an old generation of technology against a new one. The honest part: where DISCUS genuinely fits

I am not going to pretend DISCUS has no place. It is the original desktop FAI tool, built by serious people, and it earned its standing in aerospace for a reason. There is one place where its desktop heritage is a real, defensible advantage.

ITAR. Some programs require that drawing data never leave a controlled, local environment. A desktop tool with a local install and a local database fits that requirement cleanly. If your compliance posture demands an air-gapped, on-premise workflow, that is a legitimate reason to keep a local tool, and a browser-based product has to meet you on that ground before it can replace it. That is the honest boundary, and I will not pretend it away.

But be honest with yourself about where your time actually goes. Ask your quality engineer which step eats the day. It is almost never the install or the license. It is reading the drawing and building the Form 3, frame by frame, especially the GD&T and the notes. That is the four-to-five-hour task. And it is exactly where a point-and-click desktop tool is weakest and where Mavlon is deepest.
