I watched a quality engineer at an aerospace machine shop start a first article on a Tuesday morning. She had her ballooning suite open on the left screen and a six-sheet drawing on the right. She spent the next two hours correcting a machine's transcription. That is the moment people start searching for a High QA alternative. And it is the moment they tend to ask the wrong question.

The question is not which ballooning suite is best. The question is whether you should be using optical character recognition to read an engineering drawing at all.

Why people look for a High QA alternative

When buyers go looking, it usually comes down to three things.

The suite is bigger than the job. High QA is a modular quality suite, ballooning is one piece of it. If what you actually need is the drawing read and an AS9102 Form 3 filled, you are evaluating a multi-module platform to do one task, and the buying process reflects that scale.

The path to trying it has friction. There is no free version to drag a drawing into and watch. For a shop with a single quality engineer who just wants to know if the thing works on a real part, that is a wall in front of a simple question.

The ballooning still leaves you correcting. This is the big one, and it is the one no datasheet leads with. You upload the drawing expecting the software to read it. It detects the clean dimensions and quietly leaves the hardest, most consequential characteristics for you to fix by hand.

The first two are about fit and friction. The third is about the engine underneath, and it is the part worth understanding before you switch anything.

The reframe: it is not which OCR tool, it is whether to use OCR at all

Here is the sentence that reorders the whole decision. High QA describes its own 2D ballooning as smart OCR. That is not my framing. That is the product's own language for how the engine works.

Smart OCR is still OCR. The word in front of it does not change the family of technology underneath. Optical character recognition is the same lineage that turns a scanned page into selectable text. It is excellent at exactly one thing: locating characters and copying them. On a drawing, that means it can usually find a dimension sitting in a clean isolated box and lift the number out of it.

So the real choice is not High QA versus some other OCR suite. Every legacy tool in this category reads drawings the same way, in its own published words. One calls it traditional OCR. High QA calls it smart OCR. The desktop incumbents pair OCR with manual point-and-click extraction. The whole category was built in the OCR era, before a machine could actually read a drawing the way a person does. Picking a different OCR suite is picking a different brand of the same generation. That is the trap.

This is the iPhone-versus-BlackBerry shape of the thing. The BlackBerry was not a bad phone. It was the best of its generation. Then the ground moved, and the question stopped being which keyboard phone to buy. It became whether to buy a keyboard phone at all.

OCR versus AI, explained plainly

A drawing is not a page of text. It is an engineering document where the meaning lives in relationships, not in the characters themselves.

A note on sheet one governs a tolerance on sheet seven. A feature control frame is not three numbers in a box, it is a geometric instruction tied to datums A, B, and C in a specific order. A fit callout like 9 G6 is not text to be copied, it is a class that has to be expanded into real upper and lower limits. An untoleranced dimension is not blank, it is governed by a general tolerance standard whose allowable amount changes with the size of the feature.

Smart OCR sees none of that. It sees boxes of characters and copies them. It detects. It does not interpret.

So when a tool drops a balloon and writes 9 G6 straight onto the Form 3, it has not failed on its own terms. It did exactly what OCR does. It read the characters. The interpreting, the part that requires actually understanding the engineering, it left for the human. That is why your quality engineer is still correcting at the two-hour mark. The software was never reading the drawing. It was reading text and waiting for you to do the thinking.

AI drawing intelligence is a different category of machine. It does not look for characters to copy. It reads the drawing the way a trained quality engineer reads it, understanding what a frame means, what a note governs, what a fit class implies. What this looks like on a real drawing

Take one untoleranced 305 millimeter dimension on a drawing whose title block calls out ISO 2768-m.

An OCR tool detects the dimension, drops a balloon, and writes 305 on the Form 3. The tolerance column is blank, or it gets a single flat default someone configured once. Now the quality engineer has to know that ISO 2768-m gives a 305 millimeter dimension a tolerance of plus or minus 0.5 millimeters, that a 12 millimeter dimension on the same drawing gets plus or minus 0.2 millimeters, and that those differ because the tolerance depends on size. So they look it up. Forty times. Per drawing.
