FAI software automates first article inspection: it balloons the engineering drawing, numbers every characteristic, builds the AS9102 Forms 1, 2, and 3, imports measurement results, and produces the report your customer signs. The tools differ mainly in how much of the drawing they read for you, and how much reading they leave to you.

Which FAI software should you pick?

You want the drawing read and the Form 3 filled before you start

What to actually look for in FAI software

Most comparison pages list features. After watching hundreds of shops evaluate these tools, the questions that actually separate them are these eight:

Who does the reading?
Every tool detects text on the drawing. The question is what happens to the 47 untoleranced dimensions covered by a general note, the fit class that needs expanding to real limits, the flag note that applies to three features on sheet 4. Detection tools leave that interpretation to you. This single criterion decides whether the tool saves you 20 percent of the time or 80 percent.
Form 3 autofill, and what arrives in the cells
Nearly every tool markets "auto-populated Form 3." Look at a filled row: is the tolerance column carrying the actual limits, or what the OCR happened to see? A Form 3 full of raw detections still needs an engineer to finish it.
Deployment: browser or install
Desktop tools (High QA, DISCUS) mean IT involvement, per-machine licenses, and one workstation that can do FAI. Browser tools mean anyone on the team can pick it up today.
Scanned and legacy drawings
If your customers send 30-year-old scanned prints, ask for a demo on YOUR worst drawing, not the vendor's clean sample. This is where tools separate fastest.
CMM results back into the report
The Form 3 is half the job; measured results are the other half. Check the tool imports your CMM output (CSV, Excel, PC-DMIS, Calypso) and maps results to balloon numbers without retyping.
Customer format on the way out
AS9102 Rev C Excel, Net-Inspect import, PPAP dimensional results, a prime's own template. The report is only done when the customer accepts it.
Data security and ITAR posture
Defense work may contractually require GovCloud (GroundControl has it). For everything else, ask where drawings are processed and stored, and for how long. Client-side tools like Balloonist keep files in the browser; cloud tools should state their practices plainly.
Time to first useful result
Days of onboarding and a sales call before you see your own drawing processed is a real cost. The best test of any tool on this page: upload one drawing and time it.

Read the third column again. Seven of eight tools stop at detection: they find the text and place the balloons, and the engineer still interprets every general note, fit class, and flag note by hand. That interpretation is where the hours actually go. It is the reason FAI takes an afternoon instead of half an hour, and it is the part Mavlon was built to remove.

It auto-balloons drawings, builds AS9102 Rev C Forms 1 to 3, imports CMM data from any machine via CSV or Excel, and exports to Net-Inspect or customer templates, with approval workflows built for running many suppliers. Net-Inspect

Net-Inspect is less a tool you choose and more one your customer chooses for you: several primes require FAIR submission through it. It runs fully in the browser, auto-balloons with OCR, populates Forms 1 to 3, and handles electronic sign-off and customer buy-off in one place. If you are required to use it, the practical question becomes how the Form 3 gets built, which is why tools upstream of it, Mavlon included, export in its import format. High QA

High QA Inspection Manager is a desktop suite built around inspection planning and deep CMM integration, covering AS9102 and PPAP. Shops that run everything through their CMMs and want inspection plans, not just reports, get real value from it. DISCUS

DISCUS approaches the problem from the CAD side: its Smart Extract reads native CAD files, which suits model-based shops where the print is a by-product of the model. 1Factory

1Factory is a cloud quality platform in which FAI ballooning is one module alongside in-process inspection, SPC, and supplier quality. Its 1-Click Auto Balloon detects characteristics and its automatic revision diffing is genuinely useful when customers re-issue drawings. Ideagen Quality Control (formerly InspectionXpert)

InspectionXpert built a large user base as the default ballooning tool, and since the Ideagen acquisition it lives on as Ideagen Quality Control. It balloons drawings with Smart Extract and produces AS9102 FAIs and PPAP reports from a template gallery. Teams already standardized on it know exactly what it does; teams evaluating fresh should weigh it against the browser-based options on setup time. SolidWorks Inspection

SolidWorks Inspection is where most SOLIDWORKS shops start, because it lives inside the CAD they already run: an add-in balloons SOLIDWORKS drawings, and a standalone application runs OCR over PDFs and TIFFs, with AS9102, PPAP, and ISO 13485 templates in the box. If your own designers produce the drawings, that integration is genuinely convenient. The trade-offs are per-seat annual licensing that prices by headcount rather than FAI volume, Windows desktop deployment, measurement input reserved for the Professional tier, and OCR that detects text without interpreting it, so notes, fits, and flags stay manual. Balloonist

Balloonist is the lightweight option: it runs client-side in the browser so drawings never leave your machine, auto-balloons with GD&T recognition, and exports AS9102 Rev C Excel and CSV with flat per-user pricing listed publicly. For a solo quality engineer who balloons a few drawings a month and fills the forms themselves, it is honest, simple tooling. It is not trying to be a platform, and interpretation is largely on you.
